It’s one of several homes being raffled off across the country to raise money for St. Jude — the hospital in Memphis that has been saving the lives of children for nearly 6 decades.

St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Entertainer Danny Thomas founded the hospital. He was making good on a promise that he made to St. Jude Thaddeus – the patron saint of hopeless causes that he prayed to for help. Thomas was struggling to take his career to the next level and he promised St. Jude he would build him a shrine in return. His career flourished and in 1962, the hospital became a reality.

The hospital has grown from one building to a full-service campus with high-tech research centers, multiple housing options and even its own school.

Overall childhood cancer survival in the US has increased from just 20 percent when the hospital opened to more than 80 percent today.

Even though it costs more than $2 million to operate the hospital every day, families never receive a bill from St. Jude — not for treatment, travel, housing or food. St. Jude believes the only thing a family should worry about is helping their child live.
